Vietnamese Campaign Launched in Orange County

On June 18, 2004, the ALC, along with the Vietnamese American Cancer Foundation (VACF), hosted a luncheon with a guest list that included local and state elected officials, local newspapers, radio and television broadcasting stations to witness the launch of the Jade Ribbon Campaign in the Vietnamese community. Orange County, chosen as the location for the launch, houses one of the largest and most dynamic Vietnamese populations in the US.

San Diego Embraces the Jade Ribbon Campaign

The San Diego Jade Ribbon Campaign began in mid-June with a meeting attended by Dr. Samuel So and sponsoring organizations such as the Herald Cancer Association, the Taiwanese American Cultural Center, the San Diego chapter of the American Liver Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the Asian Pacific Health Center. From June to December 2004, 14 organizations coordinated 8 educational workshops on hepatitis B and liver cancer in San Diego. In addition, these groups provided free hepatitis B screenings to community members and have so far screened over 300 people.

Kick-Off in New York with Councilman John Liu

New York City Councilman John Liu, the first and only Asian Pacific American elected official in NYC, issued a proclamation in support of the Jade Ribbon Campaign and the importance of hepatitis B awareness and prevention. Since then, numerous hepatitis B and liver cancer workshops and free hepatitis B screenings have been organized for Korean and Chinese communities in Flushing, New York. These screenings have consistently shown an infection rate of 10-12% persons with chronic hepatitis B. As a result, the City of New York recently allocated $5 million to the newly created Hepatitis B Project for the lower Manhattan area. Way to go New York!

Hawaii Proclaims August Hepatitis B Awareness Month

This summer marked the inauguration of the Jade Ribbon Campaign in Hawaii. Linda Lingle, Governor of the State of Hawaii, proclaimed the month of August 2004 as "Hepatitis B Awareness Month", supporting the Jade Ribbon Campaign in a state wide effort to raise awareness and to screen and treat residents infected with hepatitis B. This was a tremendous accomplishment for the Asian Liver Center and community partners Dr. Ida Mai, her family and Dr. Naoky Tsai - certainly one for the record books.

Jade Ribbon Campaign Heads to Phoenix

The Asian Liver Center brought the Jade Ribbon Campaign to Phoenix, Arizona in November. Social workers, community leaders, and the representatives from the Arizona Department of Health gathered and listened to Dr. So discuss the issues of hepatitis B and liver cancer. Since then, the Jade Ribbon Campaign has started Jade Ribbon Arizona, a community initiative to stop the spread of Hepatitis B Virus through a local campaign of testing and vaccinations.
