Patients with Hepatitis B are seen in the clinic by liver specialists for evaluation, treatment and liver cancer screening. Aggressive screening for hepatitis B carriers over 30 years of age is promoted, as early detection and treatment of liver cancer (also called hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC) has been shown to increase survival rate. Patients with high hepatitis B viral load can be treated with an antiviral agent to decrease the progressive liver inflammation that can eventually lead to cirrhosis.
